Cool AD

Events and places to check out this spring semester in Abu Dhabi while the air still breathes cold and breezy.

The weather is windy and cool, a perfect time to venture outdoors. If you want to escape air conditioning and enjoy the fine weather, then here are a few of suggestions for where to go:
####The Corniche
If you have ever wanted to take a walk down the long strip of the Corniche, now is the perfect time to go. If walking sounds too taxing there are bikes available for rent. If you feel like going with a few friends, the tricycles can be rented for 50 minutes in either singles or groups of four.
A quiet place to stop at is The Third Place café, which is located across the street and down one block from the Bateen Street intersection. The French bakery La Brioche is also accessible from Corniche Gate 4, which NYU Abu Dhabi’s shuttle services provide a travel stop to.
There are also a handful of events coming to the Corniche. On Feb. 16, at 3:30 p.m, the Corniche will hold the first heat of the UAE Wooden Powerboat Championship, part of the city’s commitment to preserving its heritage. Next month the participants of second and third heats of the UAE Jet Ski Race will go past the Corniche.
####Umm al Emarat Park
One of the best places to visit in Abu Dhabi is Umm al Emarat Park. The general admission entrance fee is only five dirhams but provides access to most of the park’s amenities. The park itself is open from 8 a.m. to 12 a.m. every day, with no entry after 11 p.m.. The park also features its own animal barn, botanic garden, amphitheater, wisdom garden, Ripe Food Market and a Salt food truck.
Umm al Emarat will also be hosting a Love Food Festival from Feb. 16 to 18 that includes 25 different street-food vendors who come from all over the world. This event will feature live music, a bedouin tent and a food film screening. Tickets are 40 to 50 AED, which include the five-dirham entrance fee to the park and a complimentary bottle of Fiji Water. Tickets are 40 AED in advance and 50 AED on the door.
####Zayed Port
Only a 20 AED taxi ride from campus, the Mina Fish Market offers fresh fish that can be grilled on the spot. The fish market is close to the plant souk, which is a ten-minute walk away. From there, you can hail a cab home, or, if you are unsatisfied, turn right and follow the road to the Fruit and Vegetable market. These places are all within walking distance, but it would be best to bring a water bottle along.
The Fruit and Vegetable market also leads into the Dates Market where you will find a line of stores selling dates by the kilogram. Each one has an outdoor display with vendors offering tasty samples.
A short walk away, there is also Warehouse 421, a contemporary art gallery. Warehouse 421 is open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. from Tuesdays to Sundays.
