Relations between The Gazelle and administrative bodies have always been tense and defined by bureaucratic obfuscation and deep-rooted cynicism. But a close, cooperative partnership only stands to benefit both The Gazelle and NYUAD.

Four Wellness Specialist positions are being discontinued from summer of 2022. The Gazelle taps into how students have been reacting to this structural decision will have rippling implications on physical fitness and wellness at NYUAD.

Recently, we have seen positive and explicit institutional acknowledgments of first generation students and their experiences at NYUAD. While these are deeply welcome, we must also drive community conversations in tandem with institutional advocacy.

We ask for more on-campus vendors. We ask for more assistantships at higher wages. We ask for more paid summer opportunities. We ask for a temporary institutional fund. We can no longer assume institutional goodwill — we need to feel heard.

Vouloudis is tasked with the ambitious goal of strengthening the institution’s efforts, an appointment that marks a major shift in NYUAD’s sustainability landscape. “I’m not saying it’s easy. I’m not saying it’s straightforward,” he explained.

Study Away has always been marketed as the backbone of NYUAD’s global education. Faced now with the loss of study aways, we must now reevaluate what it means to receive a global education and whether Eurocentric study aways are imperative to this.

While acknowledging Student Government’s accomplishments is crucial, as I leave Council, I hope it is not exclusive to our desire to empower its members and adopt a more political, transparent and collaborative approach in our advocacy.
