The Campus Life Policy Committee consists of freshmen Chris Wheeler and Nela Noll. The committee meets biweekly with Dean Farley to discuss changes and recommendations to all non-academic policies.
Last semester, the committee published the Community Standards Document. This document was written to effectively be an interim student handbook for NYU Abu Dhabi.
“It was written so that we have most of the existing policy and protocol in one place that’s easy to access for people. It’s essentially a compilation of a lot of other documents and literature from campus life,” said Wheeler.
Currently, the committee’s focus has been on three main issues: the Health and Wellness Center, students on leave of absence and making NYUAD more affordable for those not on full financial aid.
Changes made include students now being able to choose certain options for summer housing and meal plans that make summer courses more affordable.
Wheeler told The Gazelle that the committee is examining and compiling information on the leave of absence policy in order to clarify this issue for students. It will then make a recommendation to the administration after receiving student input.
“We want to educate the student body first on the specific types of leave of absence and rights of those students on each type [of leave of absence] so that we can get more meaningful feedback and input as to a policy change,” said Wheeler.
Looking toward the future, the committee hopes to continue to work on these topics and to analyze the issue of disability access on campus.
