On Dec. 10, NYU Abu Dhabi administration sent an email advising the university community to avoid drinking the tap water on campus.
A Student Portal link embedded in the email further advised readers to not use tap water for washing dishes, making ice or rinsing fruits and vegetables.
The Student Portal notice added that most people who drink the water will not get sick. If an individual does fall sick, however, symptoms could include nausea, diarrhea and cramps, and may last up to 48 hours.
The notice also adds that students should use bottled water for oral hygiene, such as brushing their teeth, until further notice.
Though monthly tests conducted with the Department of Environmental Health and Safety have previously revealed the water quality to be safe and potable, recent samples of water did not meet the standards of the Regulation and Supervision Bureau, the UAE's water regulation body.
The Office of Residential Education will be distributing free potable water to students in the dining hall, and water coolers will be placed in each residential building.
The water advisory comes months after multiple student complaints about the taste of tap water and absence of water coolers, which used to be available in residential buildings last year.
